The PFNA (Proximal Femoral Nail Anti-rotation) is an intramedullary fixation system designed for the surgical treatment of proximal femoral fractures, particularly unstable intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures.
The system uses a helical blade fixation mechanism to compact cancellous bone within the femoral head, providing rotational and angular stability while supporting fracture fixation in patients with reduced bone quality.
Manufactured from Ti-6Al-7Nb titanium alloy, the PFNA combines mechanical strength with biocompatibility. The intramedullary nail incorporates multiple design features, including a 5° lateral offset, 1500 mm anterior bow, optional dynamic or static distal locking, and an elastic tip and groove design for controlled insertion and stress distribution.
The helical blade compacts cancellous bone during insertion, enhancing rotational and angular stability at the fracture site. Its wide blade surface provides increased bone contact during implantation while helping minimize bone removal.
The blade-based fixation mechanism is designed to resist rotational displacement of the fracture fragments and maintain stable fixation within the femoral head.
The distal locking system supports both dynamic and static locking modes, allowing the fixation configuration to be selected according to different clinical requirements.
The PFNA is manufactured from Ti-6Al-7Nb titanium alloy, combining mechanical strength and biocompatibility for orthopedic implantation.
The tail cap is designed to retain the tension pin and help prevent unintended displacement or backing out of the pin.
The nail features a 5° lateral offset and 1500 mm anterior bow, designed to correspond to the physiological anatomy of the femur.
The elastic tip and groove configuration facilitates insertion of the main nail and contributes to stress distribution along the implant.
Enhanced Rotational Stability: The helical blade compacts cancellous bone and provides rotational and angular stability, supporting fixation of unstable proximal femoral fractures.
Load-Sharing Fixation: The intramedullary nail shares mechanical loading with the surrounding bone, providing stable internal fixation while helping distribute stress.
Adaptation to Poor Bone Quality: The bone-compacting action of the helical blade is particularly suitable for fixation in osteoporotic or otherwise compromised bone.
Minimally Invasive Fixation: Intramedullary nail fixation can be performed through a relatively limited surgical approach, helping reduce soft-tissue disruption.
Support for Early Mobilization: Stable internal fixation is designed to facilitate postoperative mobilization and rehabilitation according to the treating surgeon's clinical protocol.
The PFNA Intramedullary Nail is designed for internal fixation of proximal femoral and related fractures, including:
Unstable intertrochanteric fractures (AO/OTA 31-A1 and 31-A2)
Subtrochanteric fractures (AO/OTA 31-A3)
High and low subtrochanteric fractures
Femoral shaft fractures
Pathological fractures
Complex multiple fractures
